Confused About Search Engine Optimization?

Does it all sound like a foreign language?

"SEM and SEO helps intuitive website pages gain higher SEP in the SERPs at the top SEs"

I can guarantee that you're not alone.

It's certainly not surprising - Internet Search Marketing methodologies have changed dramatically over the past couple of decades. Sitemaps and Feeds are todays proven must haves, and consistent Natural or Organic Search results are the goal. Still - the most important lessons I have learned hold true:

  • Optimize for your subject and target audience - NOT the Search Engines.
  • Keep it Clean and Simple - avoid trying to 'trick' Search Engines, focus on Organic Search results.
  • Beware of 'Guaranteed Listing or Placement' offers - Guaranteed SEO tends to involve risky, short term, often Black Hat techniques which can permanently damage your sites listing eligibility - never mind its listing position.
  • Be Patient and Persevere - like it or not, there is no 'quick fix' for long term success.

Be careful to use ONLY recommended and proven Search Engine Friendly techniques, such as XML Sitemaps, RSS feeds, and other White Hat SEO techniques which consistently demonstrate improved traffic and Natural (Organic) search listings from the major Search Engines.

Oh yes, and about that quote - this is what it says - in English:

"Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimization helps
intuitive website pages gain higher Search Engine Position(/s/ing)
in the Search Engine Results Pages at the top Search Engines".

Whew - that's quite a mouthfull!

What is an XML Sitemap?

Frequently when I ask new clients if they currently have an XML Sitemap feed for their website - I find that some confusion exists between traditional HTML sitemaps and XML Sitemaps.

A traditional HTML Sitemap is an HTML website page that contains an index or list of pages within a website. HTML sitemaps are most often used as an aid to Visitors in navigating a website.

An XML Sitemap feed is a Sitemap protocol XML file created specifically for Search Engines which also lists page URLs within a website. In addition, an XML Sitemap contains detailed information about each URL that Search Engines can use to crawl a website more effectively. This information includes:

  • When a url was last updated
  • The average update frequency of a url
  • The relative priority of a url compared to others in a website

Why Submit an XML Sitemap Feed?

Submitting an XML SiteMap for a website will provide Google, Yahoo and Microsoft/MSN with their preferred way to learn about and index website URLs.

And while it is not publicly admitted to - it is believed, and recently documented, that the use of an XML sitemap has the potential to speed-up Search Engine crawling and indexing of a website.
